Check Recently Deleted first
This is the most common reason: deleting a photo in the Photos app doesn’t remove it from your iPhone right away. It moves to the Recently Deleted album, where it stays for 30 days in case you change your mind, and until then it still takes up space on your iPhone.
To empty it now instead of waiting 30 days:
- Open Photos, tap Collections, scroll down to Utilities and tap Recently Deleted.
- Tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Tap Select, then tap the More button and tap Delete All (or select only some photos and tap Delete).
- Confirm (with iCloud Photos, the button reads Delete from All Devices). This time it’s permanent: there’s no second Recently Deleted.
Make sure you’re solving the right problem
“Storage full” can mean two different things, with different fixes:
- My iPhone is full, and I need room for new photos and apps.
- My iCloud storage is full, and I’m being asked to pay for more or delete things.
If it’s the first, you may not need to delete anything. With iCloud Photos on, go to Settings › your name › iCloud › Photos and check that Optimize Storage is chosen (on newer iOS versions it’s under iPhone Storage on that screen). Your iPhone then keeps space-saving versions of your photos while the originals stay in iCloud, so it has room again without a single photo being deleted. If it’s set to keep the originals on the iPhone instead, every full-size photo and video is stored on the device too — often the real reason it fills up fast.

Check what’s actually taking the space
Go to Settings › General › iPhone Storage to see which apps and media use the most. Often it isn’t photos but videos: a day with a couple of long clips can take more space than a whole album of photos. If you delete a few photos at a time and see no progress, look at your videos first.
The real bottleneck: deciding what to delete
Past the mechanics, what stalls most people is deciding. Scrolling a camera roll from top to bottom, judging thousands of photos with no context, is the part people give up on. deja makes it smaller: it deals you one past day at a time to relive full screen, you mark what you don’t need as you go, and before you confirm, it shows how much space the marked photos take — so you know the delete will actually free something.
Give it a moment
After a large delete, the storage figure in Settings can take a little while to update. If you’ve emptied Recently Deleted and the number still looks wrong, check Settings › General › iPhone Storage again a bit later.
What to check, in order
- Empty Recently Deleted (Photos › Collections › Utilities › Recently Deleted › Select › More › Delete All).
- Decide whether you need more space on your iPhone (use Optimize Storage) or in iCloud (delete what you don’t want; see iCloud storage full).
- Look for large videos, not just photos.
- If deciding is the slow part, relive and clean up a past day with deja instead of scrolling the whole library at once.
Deleting with deja goes through the same iOS confirmation and the same Recently Deleted album as deleting in the Photos app: one confirmation per batch, and 30 days to change your mind.
